Can Mild Cough And Stress Cause High Ferritin Level?

Question: Dear Sir, I have asked this to several doctors and I want to have your opinion as well. I'm a healthy person who sports 4-5 times a week and eat very healthy. Lots of fish and chicken and less meat. 4 years ago I have had a blood test and came out that I had a high gamma gt (80 and normal was 50 as stated and My ferritin was 257 as I remember with a HB of 9.2) and this was due to my diet and alcohol consumption as well as light smoking. I was referred to an ultrasound and it came out that I had a light / mild fatty liver. Also my cholesterol was a bit high. so I decided to change my lifestyle, so I started work outs and running for 4-5 times a week. I lost 10 kg and became 75 kg from 85 (I am 171 cm tall) and all values came normal since then. My cholesterol, lever .. etc.. I check blood every year and for this year something weird came out ( at least I think weird) My ferritin is 324 while it's stating on the report 17-230 for men.. My hb is 8.4 while it had to be minimum of 8.5-11 (but maybe this is because I sport too much?). I was suffering mild cough a week or a week and a half before the test . I also had lots of anxiety and stress the last time. Also I have eczema and nail fungal infection on foot. ( just for information to help you giving your opinion). so if this high Ferritin was from this condition, would go up quickly and then drop down slowly? I will attach my report as all other test came out normal. Crp, liver values, thyroid, Glucose, white and red blood cells...etc.. all came normal but perfect. Do I have to worry much about this value of ferritin? I have my fears and scares for this now. Note that there is no known family history (father, mother) history of hemochromatosis in the family. I don't eat much red meet as I eat fish almost everyday in the afternoon and most of time chicken in the evening. One more update, I'm consume alcohol in the weekend.. Mainly red wine. Like 5-9 glasses of wine in one weekend Value of ferritin indicated is in μg/l Can the mild cough and or stress could have caused the high ferritin while CRP is normal value? how quick does Ferritin and CRP raise due an infection and how quick it does reduce? I have been told that stress can reduce the HB a little bit and also result some higher ferritin. My gp wasnt worried about these results and because I was worried he suggested another test after 3 months. The last couple of weeks before test I didn't eat well, could HB get little lower in 2-4 weeks because of bad to less eating? I await your answer and information and sorry for this mixed information. Thanks for your time, regards, XXXX

Brief Answer: Go on healthy lifestyle&diet changes til next test Detailed Answer: Hi back XXXXXXX I have gone through the reports you uploaded and I did not find any problem either. Your HB level is slightly reduced (8.4) which is acceptable for me; I do consider as HB level at its lower range. It is true that ferritin level is influenced by: - stress - inflammation - alcohol At your case, stress-induced inflammation together with alcohol consumption are causing high ferritin levels. I advise to: - stop drinking alcohol - continue eating healthy as you doing now - go on with healthy changes in your lifestyle until you will get your blood work repeated after 3 weeks. Depending on those results, a definite management plan will be prescribed. All the best! Dr.Albana Let me know if you have further queries! I'd be glad to answer them!

The problem is I dont know if my low HB is because of less iron.. So if I take more iron then I am afraid to get the ferritin higher. I am so depressed. Anxiety.. everything. I have to wait 3 weeks until my gp will refer me to another test.

Brief Answer: Stop drinking alcohol&control stress... Detailed Answer: Hi back, There is nothing that should make you feel depressed and anxious. The only thing that concerns me is your habitual use of alcohol and stress. If you stop drinking alcohol and try to control stress, then, I'm sure your ferritin will be improved (lowered) too. If I was your caring doctor would not ask to increase iron intake, but to continue following the healthy diet and lifestyle as you are doing now. Try this until you get another test in 3 weeks time instead of getting anxious. We will talk again after 3 weeks to hear good news from you. Dr.Albana

What makes me nervous is that anemia and high ferritin is a sing of a chronic disease or even cancer... I have had several checks the last 3 years. Hepatitis, hiv and other stds. I also have had a colonoscopy and endoscopy All came clear with no any problem. This is what I have read on the net. The thing I have to stop with. By the way: my gp advised to retest after 3 months and not weeks... The things is that if there was an infection which caused my high ferritin and the lower hb, how could crp remain low at the rest while ferritin remains high?.. ( by the way my hb was only high at 9.2 when I was drinking more alcohol than now) and last year it was only 8.7 so it decreased only 0.3 and now it's 0.1 below the minimum according to this lab. Can you maybe tell me how anxiety or stress can increase ferritin and low hb? I'm still coughing but this can be now due to my anxiety. I don't know why I became like this.. All was going so wonderful... And now I have pulsatile whooshing sound for months as well where I am still under research to know what it should be.. For this I have had a head MRI as well. My gp didn't scare me at all. He said that first of all this might be common as I am from west Asia and secondly the ferritin was not very high to be concerned..and even didn't want to make me a re test again but I wanted that so he suggested 3 months.. About the alcohol. I don't drink much. My gamma would be high if I was drinking much I think. I drink in the whole weekend maybe 1-2 bottles of red wine.. About the food, I'm thinking to eat more iron food than I did like red meet which I only was eating once a week. For the rest I was eating chicken and fish.. Also non daft products.. Thank you very much for calming me in this way and I'm very sorry that I made a long story.. I await your answer.

By the wat I only drink the weekend and even then I drink red wine. For example yesterday I was drinking only 2 glasses... If the ferritin was because my alcohol then gamma gt should have been also high. But it came out normal.. Please correct me if I am wrong? I have one more information. I have fungal nails after a long duration fungal infection on my left foot.. 4 nails are infected. Could this be something which effects ferritin?

Brief Answer: Following answers... Detailed Answer: Hi back XXXXXXX It seemed a bit weird to me that you are having high ferritin, low HB and normal CRP when you got the test. As you are reporting to be having cold and long lasting fungal infection at the time when the test was carried out; if I was your caring doctor would ask to repeat blood work after 3 weeks and see if any difference. Long-lasting infections (including fungal infections) can also affect ferritin because every type of microorganism (including fungus) require iron. That could be another contributing factor too. Next, I am just trying to help you figure out if the tests findings are normal or there is any external/internal factor that we should further investigate. That's why I am asking to stop drinking alcohol (NOT AT ALL) until you repeat the test. You should be happy that your liver parameters were fine for the moment. Please bare in mind that alcoholic damages to the liver would be slowing settled. I am sure you do not want to get them altered too. As ferritin can be stored in many body cells including liver; if liver cells are damaged (inflammation, fatty liver, obesity); ferritin is leaked to bloodstream resulting high in the blood test. This is the reason I keep repeating to stay away of alcohol, try to turn your liver from fatty to normal with the healthy lifestyle and diet changes you are following. With regards to experiencing "pulsatile whooshing sound" (tinnitus); to my opinion, it might be related to mild anemia you are having or any accident/trauma you recently experienced. Hope it answered your queries to your satisfaction! If yes, kindly rate my answer when closing this thread! Otherwise, I will welcome any other question you might be having! Dr.Albana
