Can Minoxidil Solution Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

Posted on Fri, 20 Jun 2014
Question: Hi,
I am 28 years old men. I will be very thankful if you provide answer to my questions.
I am using the Minoxdil 5% ( Tugain ) Hair solution for the last 9 months. The prescribtion was given by a dermatologist when I was in XXXXXXX on Sep 2013. I had a very good sex life during Sep 2013.
My penis erection was very hard and I can fuck a Girl for 3 times in a Hour.
Now I am living in Europe from Oct 2013 . My hair has regrown a bit in the crown and it looks good now.I am happy with the results. But worrying part is my Penis erection has reduced considerably and my sex life is taking a hit.
My penis is not getting erected as before and even not in the morning after I wake up from Sleep. When I am with a Girl in bed after first ejaculation my penis goes to die state and returns back to active state only on next day. I don't want my sex life to worsen by any means.
I have to admit I smoke cigratte and drink alcohol more than my normal limits for last 9 months. i am ready to give up cigratte and alcohol from right now. Please advise me.
1. Whether its due to the Minoxdil. When I checked Online Forum it says YES there is a possibility.
2. Whether its due to I am growing old and feeling less excited now.
3. Whether I should continue with Minoxdil or not.
4. If I discontinue Minoxdil I will be having severe hair loss and how to prevent it.
5.Is there any alternative way other than minoxdil.
Please advise . Millons of thanks.

Brief Answer:
Minoxidil and hair loss

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic.

I understand from your history that you have been using 5% Minoxidil solution topically and though you are happy with the hair regrowth, you are concerned about whether it is causing erectile dysfunction.

To answer your queries-

1. Minoxidil is not known to be associated with sexual functions and erection. It is US-FDA approved drug for the treatment of male pattern hair fall and it has a very good safety profile.
There is another drug used for hair loss called Finasteride given orally, which has a theoretical possibility of causing erection problems in males. However, at doses given for hair fall (1 mg), this adverse effect is very rare and almost not reported at all. Since you are not on finasteride, you need not worry about it. But since you have searched online health forums, there is a possibility that men who were on minoxidil might have been on oral finasteride also.

2. I am afraid the answer to the 2 nd questions is very subjective and you are the best person to assess that.

3. I suggest that you continue with topical minoxidil. It has given you good improvement so far and you can safely continue it.

4. Minoxidil is generally prescribed in cases of male pattern hair loss, which is a hereditary type of baldness. On stopping minoxidil, your physiology will take over as it is a genetically programmed type of hair loss. You may experience hair fall again.

5. The alternatives to minoxidil include topical peptide solutions ( e.g - Renocia solution) and topical saw palmetto containing solutions ( e.g- Neutriderm hair loss solution). Both of these are relatively newer and their efficacy is not as good as compared to minoxidil. However, you could give it a try if you strongly want to stop minoxidil use.

Hope this answers your queries.

Brief Answer:
Minoxidil action

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
How minoxidil works in cases of hair loss is not completely understood.
Minoxidil is a vasodilator, ie, it dilates blood vessels. So it is postulated that it dilates the blood vessels of the scalp and improves circulation locally. It has only local effects and no systemic side effects. It has no effect on hormones.

Hope this answers your query.
