Can Multivitamins Be Given To A One Year Old?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jul 2015
Question: Do you recommend a 1 year old taking vitamins?

She hardly drank breast milk but she drinked Baby Formula from birth until about 7 months. She's been eating regular food since then because I couldn't get her to drink the baby formula or cereal anymore.

However I'm concerned that she might not be getting all the nutrients she need from the regular food.

Should I star giving her a multivitamin? If do, what brand?

Brief Answer:
If growth is adequate there is no need of multivitamins

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

It is good that you have started home food at age of 7 month.I have seen parents complaining of baby's dislike to home food/semislid food and preference to milk only.
Complementary feed started at 6-7 months of age helps in proper growth of the baby.
I would suggest you to give home food based on cereals, pulses, vegetable and fruits .Give at least 3 main servings(one bowl)and three small servings(mainly of fruits/formula milk)a day.
Add butter(oily substance to increase the calorie),cheese in the diet to increase the calorie value.
Most of the multivitamins are adequately met by home food and there is no need of supplementation.
I would like to know the birth weight and present weight of the baby.If baby is gaining weight adequately this also suggests that she is getting well nutrition.
Please do ask if you have any more query.
Regards
