Can One Get A Rash From Heating Pad?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Sep 2014
Question: Can you get a rash from a heating pad? I've had a circular rash on the top of my left thigh for 3 days now without any change. It's a small circle (about 3" diameter) with raised red/pink bumps that ooze when picked, almost looks like pimples. I've also been experiencing some pain in my left hip and knees, as well as muscle spasms (slightly painful) in my left leg. I am a hypochondriac and would rather not have to go to the doctor in case it is nothing to really worry about.

Brief Answer:
"Irritant/ Contact dermatitis" / Fungal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome again and thanks for the swift follow up.

After reading your problem and analyzing the pictures I can make out two possibilities :

1."Irritant/ Contact dermatitis" – it can be due to application of heating pad on the same site where you have the rash. In simple words allergy to contact of heating pad on thigh.

2. Fungal infection of the thigh area: The typical clear center and spreading margins indicate towards the same.

Do let me know if you have applied the heating pad on the affected area exactly at the same location.

Irritant/ Contact dermatitis can cause initial redness and itching with mild pain sensation. It can get aggravated by scratching.

A fungal infection is basically formed due to heat and humidity. There is clear center and spreading margins in the same.

Both of these are quite simple problem which we see in our day to day practice and persist for only the time till the aggravating factor is present. So there is nothing to be worried about. The most important part in the management of both is avoidance of the aggravating factor enumerated all above.

For the betterment kindly follow the suggestions below:

1. Avoid direct sunlight and hot – humid climate.

2. Wear cotton clothes and avoid synthetic clothes.

3. Stay in cool environment(preferably AC) and avoid sweating.

4. Take two time bath once in morning and at night time which will soothe your skin and prevent the aggravation of the problem

5. Do not Pinch pop or squeeze or rub any area.

6. Do not use any deodorants or any cosmetics over and near the affected area.

7. Do cold compression over the affected area. Take a wet towel soaked in cold water and apply it for 5-10 minutes for 3-4 times a day.

As the area is bit blurred in both the pictures, so I am not able to come on pin point diagnosis of any of these two conditions. I again very humbly request you to send a latest good resolution picture of the area with good illumination so that I can guide you regarding the treatment policy of the same.

Over and above of all the pain in left hip and knees, as well as muscle spasms doesn’t seems to be related to your present rash.

I hope these information's will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

"Wish you good health"
