Can One Have Vitamin Supplements Post Open Heart Surgery?
Question: Hi, I have just had open heart surgery for replacement of an aortic valve with a bovine valve. After 4 weeks is it safe to start taking Trichotin hair tablets again ? Are there any supplements or vitamins which I should avoid?
Many thanks
Many thanks
Brief Answer:
You can take these supplements now.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would explain that it is safe for you to take Trichotomy tablets again now.
There is no specific supplement that you should avoid taking now.
If you are taking oral anticoagulants, I would recommend avoid supplements which contain vitamin K or folic acid ( which can interfere with the metabolism of vitamin K).
Hope to have been helpful!
Kind regards,
Dr. Iliri

Brief Answer:
A healthy life-style is the most important clue.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
You just need to properly control your blood pressure values, in order to avoid excessive stress over the left ventricular outflow tract (and hence your aortic valve).
Also, you should avoid close smoking contact and use antilipidemic drugs (any statins, like Atorvastatin, Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin, etc.).
It is recommended to periodically check your aortic valve by means of cardiac ECHO.
In case you have any further uncertainities, feel free to ask me again.
Regards,
Dr. Iliri

one more question please doctor; is it safe for me to fly long haul (12 hours in the air) two months after open heart surgery and aortic valve replacement?
Are there any precautions I should take if I am an anxious flyer?
many thanks

Brief Answer:
Yes, there is no problem in travelling after this period of time.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again!
I would explain that you are able to travel after this period of time. There is not any increased risk for possible complications related to the surgery.
Anyway, I would recommend making repeated movement during your trip (go to the bathroom several times, try to move your legs, etc.), in order to avoid staying in the same position for a long time.
Hope to have been helpful!
