Brief Answer:
There are some symptoms that may be similar in both cases but knowing more about your symptoms is important to determine the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor "service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

An allergic reaction may cause different symptoms such as gastrointestinal symptoms, a skin rash or even symptoms of severe reaction (swelling of eyes and/or lips, shortness of breath, etc).

Anxiety, on the other hand, may also cause a variety of symptoms (shortness of breath, racing heart, a sense of fear, shakiness, numbness, etc) and in very rare cases it may also cause a rash (skin rash) which may seem similar to that of an allergic reaction.

In your case, it would be helpful to know what symptoms are you experiencing and for how long. The more information is made available the more we will have an understanding of what exactly is going on and further assist you.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj

Brief Answer:
Detailed answer below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

Thank you for the reply and the extra information provided.

Anxiety may cause hives but this is a very rare finding and only few cases are mentioned in the literature.
So, even though this may be a possibility, it is important to rule out other causes of allergy such as food, polens, dust, etc.
You may need to do some skin allergy tests to rule out some of such allergies.
This is generally done when you are not on treatment for allergy, so it should be done at a later stage and if they repeat again.

On the other hand, once we have allergy to a certain chemical, the allergic reaction may last up to two weeks. This means you may have hives on and off for up to two weeks. Some patients just get the hives once and they are better and no need to be treated again.

So. to conclude:
- it is important to treat the allergic reaction now as hives may come back on and off for up to two weeks.
- anxiety may cause hives but food allergy and others way more common and should be considered first.
- treating anxiety should deal with the hives due to allergy

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
