Can Pneumonia Cause Widened Hilum?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: My 6 yo was diagnosed with right upper lobe pneumonia yesterday. He is being treated with Cephalosporin and an inhaler. I just received a call that his chest xray revealed a widened hilum. They did not tell me if it was right, left or bilateral. Could this be caused from the pneumonia or is this an incidental finding that should be worked up? He follows up with his pedi tomorrow.

Brief Answer:
For now, carry in with treatment and may be do a follow up xray in future!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am sorry to hear about this finding and all the disturbing thoughts that this must have caused you. I have no reasons to think this points to a different disease process that needs to be addressed at this time. Follow up with his treatment and probably consider doing a control sometime in future if need be. Unless your doctor specifically thinks there is a reason to push further, I will not suggest or recommend such at this time.

I hope this addresses your concern. Feel free to request for more information and clarifications if need be.
