Can Seizure Activity Cause Loss Of Bladder Control?

Posted on Sat, 10 Jan 2015
Question: I think my daughter may be having absence seizures (Myoclonic seizures). She can become spaced out, tenses her muscles, her eyes flicker backwards. These things can happen multiple times throughout the day and for split seconds at a time. She's had an EEG done and it came back abnormal. We're going for a further appointment on Wednesday to see if this is actually what she has. She has learning delays in the classroom and gets frustrated easily - often reacting like a 2 year old if she doesn't get what she wants straight away (she's 5 and a half) She has good days where the behaviour and muscle tensing is hardly there and other days where she is off the radar in the amount of 'odd' behaviour that she presents. She also has significant daytime and night time enuresis. This also varies depending on the day but she will generally wet herself twice every day. She has never been fully dry for a period of time since toilet training. Could the Epilepsy be causing the wetting too? Just looking for some professional opinion/advice from the information I've given on what you think my daughter has. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Yes, seizure activity can cause loss of bladder control

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.

I am sorry for the symptoms she is facing and I am glad that she is getting further evaluation.

Seizure activity can cause loss of bladder control. If she is having absence seizures, this can make learning difficult as she will just be "absent" for portions of the teaching. This is very difficult and hard to under stand for young children. The abnormal EEG definitely is concerning for some type of seizure activity.

The good news is that seizures are often treatable. With treatment her seizure activity could resolve and her frustration and behavior problems may resolve as well. The best you can do at this point is be as supportive of her as possible and make sure that she get an adequate evaluation (sounds like you are doing this already).

Good luck to you and I hope she gets a diagnosis and treatment very soon.
