Can Slate Pencil Consumption Cause Intestinal Disease?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: I used 2 consume slate pencils since 1 year. But stopped eating dem since may 2016 as I have been experiencing stomach discomfort abdominal cramps nausea and diarrhoea.

My heamoglobin is 7% and Thyroid T4 is 14.

I live in a small village due to my official work. If I consume outside food I end up having watery stools and vomtings some times.

My concern is why is this happening to me even after stopping eating slate pencils ? How to rule out if there is any infection in stomach ?

I'm very scared now a days because of these issues. Please advice me on this.

Brief Answer:
Slate pencil could lead to hook worm infection.Should be further evaluated.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query and understand the concern.

Slate pencils contains calcium carbonate and it may be harmful especially when it is taken in excessive amount.

The continuous craving for eating inedible substances (like chalk, slate pencils etc) is known as Pica.

It is one of the features of Iron deficiency anemia.Your low hemoglobin (7%) could be due to this reason. Your T4 level is high but let me know about the complete thyroid profile like T3 and TSH if you have done it recently.

Stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting could be due to gastroenteritis which could be infective or due to intestinal irritability because of outside food consumption.

There might be associated factors like hookworm infection (commonly seen in person who eats slate pencils since long time) which needs to be managed with Albendazole preparations (tab.albendazole 400 mg to be taken once only as a deworming).Your family physician or GP may prescribe it.

For that,I would suggest you to go for some blood investigations like complete blood count & peripheral blood smear, stool tests (for routine microscopy, ova and cyst) which will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Based on the reports, we will be able to plan further management.Taking just symptomatic treatment like eldoper or ridol with antibiotic course like metrogyl would not be helpful.

Meanwhile, you can take supplemental Iron (for anemia correction),calcium (tab.shelcal) & Folic acid preparations.

Also you should take a healthy balanced diet rich in green leafy vegetables and better to avoid outside food, instead prefer home food.

You may consult some local physician for proper clinical evaluation by above mentioned tests.

Hope this helps. Please get back to me with complete thyroid profile.

Brief Answer:
Stool examintion

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome again,

I have gone through the attached reports.

First of all, your blood hemoglobin is very low for which I would suggest you to start iron treatment. You can see your family doctor or local physician for the written prescription. Tab. OROFER XT can be started once daily for initially 3 months.

Mild high level of T3 and T4 tests might be indicative of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) but I would advise you to go for FREE T3,T4 tests to rule out the remaining doubt and to confirm about overactive thyroid.

Stool tests for routine microscopy and for ova, cyst is the best test to diagnose or rule out hook worm infestations. Routine blood counts with differential counts would also be helpful.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip
