Question : My daughter is 31 yrs. old. Has had her appendix removed over 5 yrs. ago. Went to the hospital 2 weeks ago with stomach pain and spasms above her navel down to just below her navel. After a ct scan was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia with a bit of fat in it. After several hours the spasms subsided and just mild discomfort. Her primary care doctor said maybe some type of IBS. For the last 4 days she has had bouts of nausea, and right now it's bad. She is the mother of 2 boys, 5 and 2 and has been in good health, exercises and tries to eat well.

Brief Answer:
Give symptomatic treatment, obstructed hernia might have been the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query about your 31 year old daughter.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Since CT scan is showing umbilical hernia with fat in it, the most probable cause of symptoms is obstructed hernia with fat.
Nausea is a symptoms that can come on on any condition that causes pain or feeling of not feeling well. May be has an associated gastritis or acidity related problems and may subside with a PPI like Omeprazole, Domperidone and antacids.
If the hernia content of fat is reduced to abdomen the symptoms may be abated.
Ct scan showing only hernia means rest of the abdominal contents are within normal limits.

One is said to have IBS if all the relevant investigations of blood, urine, stool, CT scan, Upper GI Endoscopy and colonoscopy are normal. This diagnosis is by positive clinical history, evaluation and negative investigations.

Please give her symptomatic treatment as see the results.
An opinion of a General Surgeon helps further to pin-point the cause and may be get an appointment for surgery of Umbilical Hernia if need be.

I hope this answer helps.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
