Can Syphilis Be Contracted Through Kissing?

Posted on Mon, 26 Oct 2015
Question: A little under a month ago I open mouth kissed a prostitute, since then I have been getting some small sores on my tongue that have made me nervous about syphilis. They have all been in areas where inflamed taste buds occur. About three days ago I noticed one on the bottom of my tongue. Although it looks like a canker it does not hurt like one. What is it? I have attached a picture

Brief Answer:
Appears to be fungal lesion.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query at HCM.
I understand your concern and situation.

There are various causes of painless ulcer. Most of these ulcers generally go away by themselves. In your case it appears to be fungal lesion. I would suggest you to use chlorhexidine over-the-counter mouthwash that help to kill any micro-organisms causing mouth infections. But yes I would suggest you to get swab or scrapping to evaluate for fungal elements as it could be simple candidiasis. In that case oral fluconazole will be beneficial. Take multivitamins and calcium supplements. I would suggest you to get VDRL. I assume there was no unprotected intercourse so HIV testing is not required. Avoid spicy food and use soft bristles brush. Avoid trauma to the lesion. You can visit a dermatologist. Maintain oral hygiene.

Hope I answered your query.

I got the opinion from a dentist on this site and she said it looks like a canker sore? Would you disagree?
I uploaded the incorrect picture. The first one was from a couple of weeks ago. The one under my tongue is the current one

Brief Answer:
The current picture is quite suggestive of apthous ulcer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Yes the current picture is very much suggestive of apthous ulcer. The clarity of picture earlier was not too clear. Maintain the oral hygiene, chlorhexidine mouthwash and capsule neurobion forte for one week. Avoid spicy food and stress.

Take care
