Can Taking Acetaminophen And Naproxen Everyday Cause Any Harm?

Question: I am 58 years old and have knee pain from arthritis. I have had knee surgery and my doctor tells me the next step is knee replacement. I would like to put that off as long as possible. I get some relief from a combination of acetaminophen and naproxen. Is there a danger in taking these drugs every day?

Thanks for posting your query.
Taking acetaminophen and naproxen daily for 4-6 months can be harmful for your kidneys. Do take these only under prescription. You can use other alternatives to reduce the arthritis pain.
The treatment options include hot fomentation, lubricating agents like glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin , dycerin, etc and some life style modifications and physiotherapy.
You can start with walking and aerobic fitness exercises, quadriceps strengthening, patellar tapping, lateral heel wedges, etc- under the guidance of your physiotherapist.
A Big No to Stair case, squatting postures, any chair which has a sitting platform lower than your knees.
Knee brace can also be used for an earlier and prolonged relief.
In severe cases intra articular injections of steroids and hyaluronic acid may be needed after consultation with your orthopaedician.
Hot fomentation will decrease the joint stiffness
Hot bath of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate)-Magnesium has both anti-inflammatory and anti- arthritic properties and it can be absorbed through the skin.
You can try gaultheria oil or oil of winter green,so many patients of mine are telling they are relieved of pain with that.
You have to apply the oil on the area that has pain.
Increasing the dietary fish intake and/or fish oil capsules (omega-3 capsules) can sometimes reduce the inflammation .

Take vegetables and fruits that are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Calcium, Omega-3 Fatty acid, Zinc, Magensium and many more.
