Question: Can you develop side effects from a medication after taking it for several years? For example in the first couple of years no side effects. After several years, I noticed I experienced gastritis. I follow a very strict vegan diet and no acidic foods are associated with my diet. I am taking Metoprolol Succ ER 50 milligram tablet once daily and Losartan Potassium 50 milligram tablet once daily for high blood pressure. I take these tablets with food every morning. Can these medications cause gastritis pain or inflammation after taking them for several years?

It can develop

Detailed Answer:
Hello

After going through the medical details provided by you I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that there are several medicines which can lead to gastritis after long use.

But the medicines which you are using are not know to cause gastritis.

You can take sone proton pump inhibitor like Pantoprazole in morning empty stomach for 7 days.

I hope this information will be helpful.

Even if you take a proton pump inhibitor, it still does not solve the underlying cause. How can I determine if these medicines are either not or causing me the problems associated with Gastritis?

Brief Answer:
Hello Again

Detailed Answer:
Metoprolol is not known to cause gastritis. However less than 5 % of the patients who take losartan do experience symptoms of gastritis.

But if the symptoms are mild then try can be taken care with proton pump inhibitors. Or else it can switched with sone other medicine like Telmisartan which is not know to cause gastritis.

You can discuss this with your treating doctor.

Hope to have been helpful.
