Question : Can taking omeprazole for a suspected ulcer and GERD result in strong foul smelling urine after taking prilosec for a few days? I drink a lot of water, am eating very little- mostly a small amount or organic brown rice for breakfast, 1 or 2 eggs, very little bit of sliced chicken, bananas, melon. I have a history of acid reflux and have had very recent blood tests for H Pylori which were negative. I am negative for diabetes, anaemia.

Brief Answer:
Omeprazole should not have any urinary effects

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
No, I have never had a patient complain of a change in urine smell with taking omeprazole, and I cannot find any reports of this as well, so I would say this is not likely from the omeprazole. A change in urine smell is not necessarily concerning, as it can happen with diet or hydration status, though it sounds like it shouldn't be from that from what you've said. It can sometimes be from a urinary tract infection, so if you have any other signs of this, such as burning when you urinate, increased urinary frequency or urgency, or fever, I would have your urine checked for this. Otherwise, it should be safe to see how it goes the next few days and see if it goes away. If not, you could then get a urine test as well to see if that shows anything abnormal.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
Thanks.
