Brief Answer:
There are other possible causes of elevated D-dimer than clot in the lungs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to " Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query.

The elevated levels of the D-dimer may indicate a blood clot, but not the location, so, it may be deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary thromboembolism, etc.

D-dimer also may be found elevated in all the cases where the fibrin is not metabolized correctly such as liver disease, trauma, heart attack, etc.

It also may be a characteristic of yours also.

D-dimer is not a test that may be used to confirm a diagnosis, it is a test used to exclude blood clot conditions.

So, if you have not clinical problems that may justify a blood clot or a coagulation problem, you should not be worried.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

Would normal blood work CBC or cmp show clotting problems? The er just always sends me home when they see no blood clot in lungs. It’s been elevated for years

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

The normal blood work results are not suitable for any clotting problems, it may give a clue about any major issues only.

If there is no clinical reason to justify blood clots, don't worry about the elevated D-dimer values.

If any clinical data point towards blood clots problems, further investigations should be carried out.

Discuss with your Doctor for these issues.

Take care.
