Can Ultrasound Detect Lumps In The Throat?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,
I have some question.

I recently had ultrasound of Neck and I have some questions.

1. Can ultrasound detect if there are any lumps/masses in the throat?

2. I remember the guy was spending more time on the right side of the neck/ Parotid Gland area, he also checked left side of the neck. But I remember he has not put the device on the front side of the throat. If one orders Neck Ultrasound, the technician will typically cover all neck including throat right?
I assume, the Ultrasound neck will cover thyroid, throat and the salivary glands.

Please let me know.

My Ultrasound result is that it has small cyst in the Parotid gland. I just want to confirm this in turn explains there are no masses in the throat.

Thanks,
XXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound is not ideal to detect throat lesions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Ultrasound is not ideal to detect throat lesions.Lesions that are confined to lumen of throat can't be evaluated by ultrasound.
Only huge lesions which is extending to soft tissue/muscles of neck can be roughly evaluated by ultrasound.
In general,we can say that ultrasound is not ideal to detect throat lesions.Throat lesions are well evaluated by direct visualization and CT scan.
