Can Vaginal Warts Result In Herpes?

Posted on Tue, 10 Nov 2015
Question: My wife of 22 years has just been tested positive for herpes 2 She was caught having an affair three to four weeks ago. This had been going on for a period of two weeks. I have had a test three days after finding out and returned a negative for all STD's. She is claiming she has had this condition from before we met. All tests prior to our two children's birth 1998 and 1999 showed all was ok. My question is is it possible to have lived with her for all these years and not contracted the disease, or is it a result of her unprotected sex with this other man.

Brief Answer:
unlikely that it was present for so many years and got unnoticed

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query. I understand your concerns.

Herpes virus type 2 with genital infection is usually persistent and can't be eradicated once it has developed. With treatment it subsides but in more than 80% cases recur again. Suppressive continuous therapy with antivirals can prevent recurrences though the virus stays in the body. This can also prevent transmission to partner to some extent.

So though we can't say for sure from where she got this disease, it is unlikely that it was present for 22 years and she did not have any recurrences in between nor did she infect you (assuming that she was not on continuous antivirals).

Hope this helps.
Regards

Thank you very much for the information. My wife claims she was told by he local GP that the HSV2 was caused by an case of vaginal warts she suffered when in her early twenties. Could these have caused the herpes, are the two related? Irrespective as you have said it is extremely unlikely not to have shown symptons or passed it on to me over the twenty two years we have been together. r

Brief Answer:
not from warts

Detailed Answer:
genital warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), not HSV. SO they are not related.
