Question: Hi, doctor. I have had very uncomfortable mucus in my throat now for weeks and have tried salt water gargles, Mucinex, some teas with lemon and honey and nothing seems to help. It seems like it's lodged in the throat and feel it when trying to swallow. Is there anything u can suggest or any medication I can get from my family doctor? Thanks

Brief Answer:
The sensation of phlegm could be due to Laryngopharyngeal reflux

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I appreciate you asking this.

I read the question carefully and recognize the issue you're having.

Your symptoms are brought on by acid reflux disease and laryngopharyngeal reflux. Mucosal irritation is brought on when stomach acid refluxes into the throat. The body releases too much phlegm or saliva to lessen this inflammation. In the throat, you can feel this.

Making lifestyle adjustments and using a few laryngopharyngeal reflux prevention drugs is the best strategy to solve this problem.

I'll give you some advice:
1. Sip warm water frequently.
2. Take acid reflux medicine (such as proton pump inhibitors and prokinetics).
3. Steer clear of chilled food & beverages, coffee, spicy food, and hot beverages.
4. Refrain from stress and exercise frequently.

You ought to improve with the aforementioned steps.

I hope this answers your query. Revert if there are any further queries.

Thank u for all your good advice and suggestions. So far, no relief and I do believe u have the correct diagnosis - throat still feels like it's clogged, very dry, and irritated. Would any type of antibiotic be of any use? Also, would any kind of de-humidifier be of any help? Thank u so much for your answers to those two questions.

Brief Answer:
The antibiotic doesn't have any role...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

Honestly, the antibiotic doesn't have any role in this situation. Dehumidifier would worsen your symptoms. Humidified air lessens throat irritation by reducing mucosal inflammation.

The gold standard treatment for this issue is a proton pump inhibitor with a pro kinetic. Once the causative agent is addressed, the symptoms would relieve gradually.

I hope this clarifies your doubts. I wish you a speedy recovery.
