Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I understand your feelings and how stressful this situation might be for you but there is not enough information to answer your question. First of all, the answer depends a lot on the site of infection (endocarditis, abscess, blood-stream infection, etc). The severity of the infection is very important as well. For example, two patients may have an abscess caused by the same pathogen but their outcomes may be different because one of them may have various aggravating factors (like a compromised immune system, diabetes mellitus, etc).
Streptococcus anginosus requires antibiotic treatment but other kinds of treatment (drainage of abscess) may be necessary as well. Cultures and antibiograms are commonly used to guide treatment. Since your brother has stayed for a month or so in the hospital, it's very likely that he has endocarditis. This is a serious type of infection that involves the heart tissues and it difficult to eradicate (it requires appropriate antibiotic treatment for several weeks). Most patients do well though.
I hope I've helped you to understand your brother's situation better. If you'd like to provide more information about his illness, I'll be glad to share more comments.
Kind Regards,
Dr Panagiotis Zografakis,
Internal Medicine Specialist
