Question : I have a question for a gynecologist/oncologist?

If a pregnant female was given 'Stilbesterol' in the first trimester of pregnancy 60 years ago to preserve the pregnancy, one dose only, could that cause that fetus (female) to develop breast cancer before age 40? The patient was well treated and is still a survivor today.

Brief Answer:
Not likely.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

A single dose of stilbesterol is not likely to cause such a change so as to predispose the baby to breast cancer. The effect would have been seen on the mother first. The effect of such medicines on the baby is much less as compared to its effect on the mother. A single dose is not likely to cause any such lasting damage.

I hope this answers your query.
