Could An Aneurysm Be Somehow Associated With The CHF?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Apr 2021
Question: I forgot to mention that he has also been discovered to have an aneurysm of 5cm. Could this be somehow associated with the CHF? What might be his expected life expectancy in these conditions with ongoing medical care? His doctor feels he is getting everything available, and there is nothing else the doctors can contribute.

Brief Answer:
Probably your doctor is right

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

Well, 5cm aneurysm is not problematic and it doesn't require any treatment. It should not affect his heart function. In his age, CHF is mostly caused by weakening of heart muscle, heart valves disfunction or cardiomiopathies. Also, viral miocarditis may be the cause. But even if some structural heart disorder is found, I don't think that he is a candidate for some extensive surgery. But, he may reduce risks of heart related death by regulating blood pressure, avoid physical and emotional stress reduce salt and alcohol intake, quit smoking and regulate blood sugar and lipids. When severe CHF in this age is diagnosed then patient may live from several months to 2 years. But it is hard to prognosis without complete medical history.

Wish you good health.

Thank you. Is there any protocol that a person including my father could follow in their younger years to check proactively whether they have a problem that could lead to congestive heart failure?

Hi again

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Well, there are no clear guidelines for people who don't have symptoms. But some cardiologists recommend routine heart ultrasound after 60 and then repeat it every 5 years. Also ecg should be done in elderly every 2-3years. If patient experience some pain in chest or unexplained fatigue or palpitations then these tests should be more often and more extensive. However, sometimes, heart failure can't e prevented and it may be just slowed down a bit by some medications. Wish you good health. Regards
