Question: Dear Doctor,

A while ago i was doing a nasal wash and while using it onnone nostril, i accidentally blocked the other nostril until i felt a thud like feeling in my left ear. then i realised my other nostril was blocked. i immediately released the blocked and fluid flowed from the nostril.

just want to ask if that would cause a ptoblem and if so what could it be?

Brief Answer:
This is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This is normal.

2. When the other nostril is blocked while doing a nasal wash, fluid pressure builds up in the nose and nasopharynx (the area behind the nose). The tube connecting the ear to the nose (Eustachian Tube) opens in the nasopharynx.

3. The resultant pressure forces saline into the Eustachian Tube, which is normally in a collapsed state. The sudden opening and the fluid pressure causes the 'thud' sound.

4. This may happen on one or both sides.

5. Hence patients are instructed to keep both nostrils open while doing a nasal wash. Ideally the saline should flow out through the other nostril.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
