Question: Dear Doctor,
My daughter is 3 years old. She is complaining of stomach ache today and she has done potty seven times today. Though the stool is not loose but, every time she has complained for stomach ache, she has gone for potty.

We have Rantac syrup at home which I remember vaguely was given in similar situation earlier. Please suggest if Rantac can be given? or please suggest any other medicine/precaution in this condition?

Brief Answer:
Most likely due to colitis, antibiotic with antispasmodic should be given

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for asking on this platform

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
Increased frequency of motion which is not watery associated with pain abdomen is common in colitis due to some infection.
Rantac is an antacid and is mainly used in non infective gastritis. In gastritis pain will be the only symptom with normal stool frequency.
Here antibiotic like combination of ofloxacin and ornidazole(O2 syrup or other brands) with antispasmodic like mefenemic acid(meftal P syrup or other brand) will help.
Although the symptoms should improve within one or two days the antibiotic the antibiotic should be given for 5 days.
Give plenty of water with normal healthy diet.
These are the prescription medicines and they need to be prescribed by a pediatrician.
If there is no improvement or condition worsens please consult your pediatrician.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards

Hi Doctor,
Just to update that now the motions have converted into loose motions.
What shall we do in this scenario now and what should be the dietary precautions which we should take? We stay in XXXXXXX region and it is cold here (for your information).

We haven't started the treatment suggested by you yet. Please suggest the treatment as per current condition now. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Add some probiotics and zinc with plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for follow up

Here I would like to add some probiotics like Enterogermina or Econorm with zinc syrup 20 mg daily.
Continue antibiotic and give plenty of fluids (ORS) to avoid dehydration.
If child is not taking ORS you may give plain water also.
Give easily digestible food items like khichdi, upma, XXXXXXX vegetable soup etc. Avoid giving milk and even if milk is given please don't add sugar as it increases the loose motion by increasing the osmolarity.
It may take three to four days for the stool pattern to get normal.
Keep a close watch for urinary frequency, general activity, vomiting and frequency of stool.
If stool is too watery and frequent (more than 4/hour), urinary frequency is less, there is frequent vomiting, or baby is not taking fluids properly please consult your pediatrician.

Wishing for her speedy recovery.
I shall be glad to help further if you need any.
Thanks and regards
