Question : Dear Doctor,
My daughter is 3 years old. She is complaining of stomach ache today and she has done potty seven times today. Though the stool is not loose but, every time she has complained for stomach ache, she has gone for potty.
We have Rantac syrup at home which I remember vaguely was given in similar situation earlier. Please suggest if Rantac can be given? or please suggest any other medicine/precaution in this condition?
Regards,
Ankur XXXXXXX

Hi Doctor,
Just to update that now the motions have converted into loose motions.
What shall we do in this scenario now and what should be the dietary precautions which we should take? We stay in XXXXXXX region and it is cold here (for your information).

Ankur

Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.
I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Most often children suffer from viral infections which make them pass loose watery stools. The green colour occurs due to rapid transit through large intestine where the bile pigments do not get adequate time to convert to the yellow colour of stool. The cause does not need to be treated and is self limiting. It is a very bad practice to give antibiotics in such cases and I would insist you to refrain from it unless the stool is blood stained. You can give Rantac but it is rather optional. However, the lost water and salts need to be replenished. ORS (oral rehydration solution) is the mainstay of treatment and needs to be given. A home based alternative would be to mix six (6) level teaspoons of Sugar, Half (1/2) level teaspoon of Salt, One Litre of clean drinking water i.e. 5 cupfuls (each cup about 200 ml.) and to give it sip by sip. If the child is otherwise active and playful you need not worry.
Also give curd or yogurt since it contains plenty of beneficial bacteria and should help. Tomorrow you can fetch and give zinc supplements like Zinconia Syr 10 ml once daily for the next 10 days. You need not worry. It should gradually return back to normal.
Feel free to write back.
