Question: Dear Sir,

I am suffering from right sided temporomandibular joint stiffness and tightness. I feel like muscles on right side of head around tmj are very tight and it creates a lot of discomfort to me in my daily life. I have done MRI of head and it was normal and I have checked with neurologist also . They told me it is due to migraine problem but I suspect that it is a tumor of temporomandibular joint or any other abnormalities of tmj joint. So I want to know whether tumors of tmj are visible on a head mri or it requires another mri for tmj joint. Please kindly suggest me. My tmj joint on right side feels stiff but does not cause any pain or other symptoms.

Brief Answer:
A separate scan of temporo-mandibular joint is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on this, you need a a separate scan (CT or MRI) of right temporo-madibular joint (TMJ) region. MRI brain does not cover the TMJ region.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Dear Sir,

I have read on some website that MRI of Head also shows joints of head and soft tissues and In some articles I have read that MRI of head can show tumor in tmj region also. But for detailed examination of joint a seperate MRI is needed. In my head MRI it does not show any tumor or abnormal growth so I want to ask you whether I should go for a seperate MRI of tmj or it is not necessary at all.

Brief Answer:
You should go for a separate MRI of TM Joint

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I agree with you that big tumor or any other major problem of TM joint may get picked up on MRI brain. However, any minor abnormality will get missed. Since most of your symptoms are related to TM joint, a dedicated and detailed MRI of TM joint would be advisable.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
