Question: Hello Doctor - My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex on or about 05/17 when she was ovulating - unbeknownst to me. She was supposed to get her period on 06/01. She missed her period and was having symptoms related to early pregnancy and PMS: frequent urination, cramping, sensations as though she was menstruating but wasn't. She took E.P.T. home pregnancy tests the day after she missed, three days after, and the fourth day after she missed her period. She says the first test was negative, but checked a few minutes later and may have seen what she describes as, "a very very faint line". All additional tests were negative. On the fourth day, she reported she did in fact get her period and it appears to be normal. She says she is not spotting. On the fourth day she also reported having a metallic taste in her mouth after eating what she described as awful tasting Chinese food - as well as some numbness on the right side of her tongue. Today is the fifth day after her period was supposed to arrive and she is still reporting normal menstruation.

I know the symptoms of menstruation and early pregnancy can be basically identical. I have been essentially losing my mind reading posts and information on the internet related to these topics. Does any of this sound normal? Am I able to reasonably assume she is not pregnant? We are not try to conceive.

As an aside: The week after she was supposed to have ovulated, she was under a tremendous amount of stress. She is usually under a good deal of stress, but that week was especially difficult. She also has Chron's Disease, but does not take her Lialda as prescribed.

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

In early pregnancy there can be implantation bleeding in some women and this can be related to sometimes be mistaken for a period by some women. This only happens in 1/3 of pregnancies and it is not similar to period in that it is normally very light and pink not heavy and red blood as is seen in a period.

If the bleeding she is experiencing as heavy as it usually is and the blood seen is red (though at day 5 , it may now be lighter and decrease intensity in colour), then more than likely it is her period.

The stress that she was experiencing could have delayed her period, emotional or physical stress are some of the most common causes for period delay.

Pregnancy tests check for HCG hormone which is present in the urine normally by day 12 to `14 after conception. Any test would be positive now since you were intimate the middle of may. If you wish to ease your mind, she can do a test now, it would give a definitive answer at this stage.

She may want to consider the use of formal contraception to reduce the chances of an unplanned pregnancy.

I hope this helps
