Question: Hi! I just got back an MRI which showed a complex meniscus tear. The other findings I do not understand. Can you explain them?
OSSEOUS AND ARTICULAR STRUCTURES:
Bones: Distal femur shows heterogeneous signal suggesting red marrow conversion
.
Patellofemoral compartment: Mild grade I chondromalacia
Medial compartment: Focal grade III chondromalacia
Lateral compartment:No significant hyaline cartilage disease.
Fluid: Small joint effusion and a small Baker's cyst
IMPRESSION complex tear body posterior horn medial meniscus with a horizontal radial component as described
and some focal grade III chondromalacia medial joint space
2 heterogeneous distal femur marrow signal most likely red marrow conversion

Brief Answer:
Needs Arthroscopic surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
I have gone through your attached MRI Report.
Salient points you have already enumerated.
Medial Meniscus complex tear post part is complex means damage is in multiple plains. It needs arthroscopic surgery for repair or removal depending on arthroscopic finding.
Chondromalacia: Bones inside a joint are covered with cartilage for smooth functioning When the cartilage is deficient , it is called chondromalacia . Grade 1 is minimal changes while grade 3 is almost complete loss of cartilage exposing bones.
Joint Effusion is free fluid in the joint along with a collection posteriorly as Baker's cyst. ( Extension of swelling behind the knee)
Red Marrow Conversion - It means that the character of red bone marrow has changed with probably collection of watery or fatty substance.
Thanks for the question. I hope to have answered your query. Please feel free to ask any other question.
