Posted on Fri, 26 Feb 2016
Question: Hi, I am 30 male (wife is 27 year old)married 2 years back, We are not able to conceive , trying from past 1 year. i consulted to urologist and my sperm count is found to be just 3 million/ml, 30 % motility and 30% abnormality. I have little swelling in my left testicle from past 12 years but it was found hydrocele after scrotal Doppler. My doctor prescribed paternia xt for 3 months with deflazacort 6mg(2 after breakfast and 2 after dinner).
Now i am worried as many person suggested deflazacort is steroid and it can cause male infertility.
Should i continue deflazacort, Please suggest. I am worried as steroid can have negative effect on my health and fertility in future. Please guide whether should i continue with deflazacort and what steps i should take to get child.

Brief Answer:
Deflazacort can be taken for a short period of time

Detailed Answer:
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concern regarding the safety of Deflazacort (Steroid) in the treatment of infertility.
After having gone through your history and the uploaded result of semen analysis I am of the opinion that
1. The ejaculate volume (semen) is low
1. Your sperm count is low
2. Grade A+B sperm motility is also low

Paternia tablets contains essential nutrients and anti-oxidants which helps in increasing the sperm count and the motility hence prescribed by your doctor, so continue to take it for at least 3 moths.
Also you have to increase sperm motility up to 50% to high up the chance for successful pregnancy. You need to repeat the semen analysis test after 3 months.
Regarding Defalzacort (steroid), it is sometimes prescribed to treat the infertility due to low sperm count caused by antisperm antibodies but for a short period of time say 3 months or so. It does not affect your fertility however it may cause other side effects like gastritis, weight gain, high BP, etc. So, continue to take it as prescribed by your doctor.

Besides the above medications, you need to have certain life style modifications to improve the sperms quality like:

1. Take healthy balanced diet and eat fresh fruits or leafy vegetables.
2. Need Multivitamin (Specially Vitamin-E & C) and Zinc supplements with diet
3. Regular physical exercise and try to reduce the body weight (if you are overweight)
4. Avoid hot working place and wear loose undergarments
5. Avoid stress/psychological upset
6. Take bath with only cold water and maintain personal hygiene.
7. Avoid alcohol and stop smoking
8. Drink plenty of water/fluids to keep hydrated and active all time.
9. Avoid too frequent sexual intercourse and do it at an interval.
10. Take care of testicle to avoid any kind of trauma/ infection.
11) Periodic health check up to your doctor and measuring blood sugar & BP.
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful in conceiving your wife.
Best regards.
