Do I Have IIH?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jan 2025
Question: I had a lumbar puncture on Tuesday and now when I stand or sit up I have a fullness in my ears and am dizzy and nauseous but don't have a headache. I was told I have IIH and was started on XXXXXXX 500 mg twice a day. I don't know if it is the LP or medication that is making me feel sick. I am fine when I am lying down.

Brief Answer:
Probably symptoms linked to lumbar puncture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

I have read your question.

Most likely, your symptoms are linked to lowering the intracranial pressure after you get up.

Some cerebrospinal fluid may leak in the puncture site, so, this may result in lowering of the pressure and subsequent symptoms.

Diamox decreases cerebrospinal fluid production and is unlikely to cause symptoms like yours.

Lying down for few days and staying well hydrated should improve your condition.

In some cases, a blood patch on the puncture site may be necessary.

Discuss with your Doctor these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks.

If a lowering of the pressure is the cause and the medication stops production of CSF would it be wise to stop the medication until things equal out and then restart it?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

I would recommend a more moderate approach to your problem, instead of stopping the medication you can try a lowering of the dose, combined with rest and sufficient fluids intake.

Discuss with your Doctor these issues.

Hope this helps.

Take care.
