Do Anabolic Steroids Cause Depression?

Question: Hi Dr.

I've been on a course of anabolic steroids, for muscle growth (I understand the legal/medical risks ). For 12 weeks. Normally Ananbolics cause a sense of well being, with depression being a side effect of coming off and the post cycle therapy. Unusually, I have developed depression and severe lack of energy for two weeks. It started out mild and turned severe over the last 2 weeks.

I'm planning on seeing a psychiatrist but I wonder why this could be an issue while on cycle?

Hi,

Thanks for posting the question

The side effects of anabolic steroids depends on the type of steroids used. Though anabolic steroids can cause a feeling of wellbeing, when in excess can lead to mood disturbances and depression.

I have seen XXXXXXX psychosis in a patient who has taken the normal dose of anabolic steroids. This is because the sensitivity of different individuals to same dose of anabolic steroids differ. So when srarted on these medications we give warning to slowly titrate the dose and stop the drug if any mood disturbance, head or migraine set in.
