Do Earlobe Creases Predict Heart Trouble?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: Hi. I'm a 31 year old female and I've noticed that since getting my ears pierced I have ear creases. I've read that this could mean I'm at risk for CAD. Is there a link between ear lobe creases and heart disease or is this likely due to my piercings.

Brief Answer:
You have nothing to worry about!

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that there are insufficient clinical data based evidence to support a relation between CAD and ear creases.

Many studies have suggested that ear creases can indicate that a person is at a higher risk for coronary artery disease and early aging. But there are many controversial studies that have found no possible relations between these findings.

Anyway, considering your young age and the fact that you don't refer to have any angina symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath, etc.) or any other cardio-vascular risks (dyslipidemia, smoking, diabetes, family history for cardio-vascular disease, obesity, etc.), I would conclude that you have nothing to worry about.

I would recommend just periodically scheduled check ups (every year or six months) with some basic tests just to be sure that everything is OK:

- a resting ECG
- a chest X ray study
- some blood lab tests (complete blood count, kidney and liver function tests, fasting glucose).

Meanwhile, I would recommend you to have a healthy lifestyle:

- a healthy diet (Mediterranian diet is recommended)
- perform a lot of physical activity

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Ok. thank you. I've been very worried about this! I do not smoke. I get regular check ups and I am not obese. it is scary to read things that suggest I could be at risk for heart disease because I have ear creases

Hello again!

You have nothing to worry about! Just relax!

I would recommend to continue with your healthy lifestyle because this is the best thing you can do.

These are just unproven theories. Besides the studies have been performed in patients older than 50 years old and with symptoms suggesting for coronary artery disease.

So just do not think about it any more!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
