Do Elevated Thyroid Levels Affect The Weight Of The Baby During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Dec 2023
Question: I am 35 weeks pregnant and have been told that I might be having a small baby because growth scan parameters show baby in 7th Centile. Doctors also said that the baby might not put on weight as expected, baby has lower tendency to gain weight. I recently got to know that my thyroid levels were elevated, 6.17 (whereas normal range is below 3 in third trimester). Is it true that thyroid might be a reason baby might not put on weight as necessary? (Doppler results show that blood flow to the baby is normal.)

Additionally, I am a small structured woman and so is my mother. I was told that I was born with low birth weight. Could it be a reason why the baby is small? Genetics play a role in this as well?

Also, can you please let me know what would be the ideal weight of a baby at 35 weeks? EFW given to me now (at 35 weeks) is 2016 gms.

Brief Answer:

The baby's growth is less.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The parameters on ultrasound showing the baby in 7th centile suggest that the growth of the baby is lesser than normal.

If the growth is on a lower side in the previous scans also then it suggests that the growth is uniformly on the lower side and this is not affected by the mother's stature as the comparative data is prepared according to the XXXXXXX standards.

The low levels of thyroid hormone can delay the developmental milestones but do not affect the physical size of the baby.
If you were born as a low birth weight baby at full term then genetically your baby can also be a low birth weight one.

The ideal weight of a baby at 35 weeks should be between 2500-2900 grams.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
