Do Night Sweats And Sore Throat Along With Fatigue Indicate HIV?

Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: Hi Dr.

I had unprotected sex 6 weeks ago. My question is more about my symptoms and test results. I took a rapid blood-prick test at 6 weeks exactly. It was negative, but I have had symptoms, night sweats and a sore throat in the first 2 weeks and now fatigue into the 6th week. No fever though. So, not sure what my status is. Very concerned about further testing. I also had RNA PCR test at 7 days that was undetected.

Do the symptoms mean Hiv? Does 6 week test trump symptoms? Very concerned. I hope to have a quick response.

Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
HIV can't be predicted by symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question .I am Dr Matin and will be answering queries.
HIV/AIDS disease can't be judged /ascertained by symptoms because it causes general symptoms like sore throat , fever , loose motions, cough, lymph node enlargement , which are also found in common ailments. To confirm the presence of HIV one needs to get his/her blood tests done and the tests should come positive .
So symptoms mean nothing as far as the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS is concerned .
You have done a good job in going for your tests-- HIV RNA PCR @ 7 days and rapid tests @ 6 weeks which have been reported negative. This makes odds
in your favor.
Modern tests pick up 95% of positive cases by 30 days and 99.7 % at 90 days.
So my suggestion is that you go for another test @90 days post exposure which will conclusively clear the uncertainty about your status.
Hope it helps.
Regards

Thanks Dr., I did an 8 panel test as well, around the same time as the blood prick test, and everything was negative. They drew blood for the HIV antibody test and it was negative. The lady at the test site said it was 97-99% at 6 weeks with there test, so I guess these %'s vary. Here is my question, I have this weird warm sensation in my groin (testicles) and it goes under my but. It makes it hard to sit for awhile and even concentrate. It is not a burning sensation, just a weird warmth that is bothersome. It started in the last week. What is this?? Is it related to an STD? Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
Might be related to STD's

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your response.

Yes it might be to be related to other STDs but I can't confirm it without examination, so my suggestion is that you consult a local doctor/skin specialist. I am sure he/she will be able to examine you properly, order some other tests and treat you accordingly.

Hope this helps.
