Do People With Blocked Right Carotid Artery Have Intolerance To Heat?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Sep 2014
Question: My husband has been told his right carotid artery is 100% blocked.
My question is this, Do people with this condition normally have an intolerance to heat? He goes through periods of not being able to function when outside in the heat. He says that once the sun hits his neck he gets weak and can't continue whatever he happens to be doing at the time.

Brief Answer:
Get a Thyroid function test done

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, the treatment is correct.

Please explain the symptoms he gets when he is outside. Does he get such symptoms when he is not in sun?

There is no published relation to the heat intolerance with Carotid occlusion. I have not come across such complaints in my patients of Carotid occlusive disease.

You can get a Thyroid function test done which might point towards Hyperthyroidism which is one of the commonest causes of heat intolerance.

Take care and please let us know if we have been able to answer your query successfully.

When heat or direct sunlight hits him he starts immediate sweating on his back
and totally drains him being able to function, for instance his muscles start to tense in his lower back and buttocks area along with his legs giving out.
It's not anything to do with breathing, no tightness in his chest, etc.
Just the above symptoms, but he can go inside and sit for a minute and will
return to normal.
On cooler days, he doesn't seem to have as much trouble and sometimes none
at all on those kinds of days.
Anytime he's out in direct sunlight with temps being 80 degrees or above he
gets overheated instantly. Used to never have a problem being outside in any heat, actually is robbing him from his love of being outdoors.
Any other help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Thanks for the detailed description.

The only likely possibility seems hyperthyroidism. So please get a Thyroid function test done and let me know. Its a blood test.
