Do Psychiatric Medications Have An Effect On The Writing Skills Of A Person?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Oct 2015
Question: Hi, I'm wondering if certain psychiatric drugs can have an impact on writing and the language areas of the brain? I am having a hard time writing after being on lithium, zyprexa and lexapro.
I need help. My current psychiatrist has been rude, dismissive and uncaring. I have a BA in communications and writing is my life. Help!

Brief Answer:
Side effects of psychiatric medications

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your excellent question.

These drugs, generally speaking, do not affect language and writing. Lithium in an overdose can have cognitive side effects, and sometimes Zyprexa especially when first started can be sedating which can affect cognition. However, these are temporary and resolve with time.

My psychiatrist wanted me on them six months to a year. I chose to taper myself because I couldnt stand sleeping heavily and not being able to function.

I was placed on these in April and was on these including Klonopin and Cogentin that were stopped in May.

I currently have no withdrawl symptoms. No nausea. No headaches.

Do you have any idea why I am having problems? If the meds are not the issue, I'm wondering what is? I still don't feel like 100% my old self. Avid writer, reader, big thinker. I'm wondering where my sense of humor has gone to??

Do I bother with a CT scan to rule out brain damage? Drpression was diagnosis.

Brief Answer:
Further details

Detailed Answer:
This is a complicated issue. Taking yourself off medications makes the assessment difficult, because withdrawal and recurrence of symptoms could play a role. A CT/MRI would likely not be helpful here.

I recommend speaking to me in greater detail using the link below, or visiting your psychiatrist and telling them you discontinued your medications, which plays an important role in the evaluation.
