default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: Do shallow lateral meniscus tears heal on their own? My doc wants to trim it off, I also have a un displaced fracture posterior tibial plateau...when I drive my shin area aches..should I not drive,. What does it mean the fracture has intact insertion all footprint of the Plc. Most of the time is this a successful healing without surgery. I want to get back to exercise..sorry I am asking so many questions..I am so worried I will not get back to exercise! Do you see this very much? Thanks again so much!
How will I know that the injury is fully healed since it did not show up on the xray..will I have to have another MRI.
Anything I can do or eat to ensure healing..besides staying off of it
Also does massage help bring blood supply to the area.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Partial thickness tears that are shallow and stable (<3mm depth and <1cm length) generally heal spontaneously. Unstable partial thickness tears, however, should be repaired. Trimming off of such a tear can hasten the process of healing.
Driving means a stress for your knee and its ligaments. If it is painful, it is best to not to drive.
The insertion of tendon is alright. It will take some time to heal but you will be able to return to exercise well.
After proper healing the pain will disappear and you will be symptomatically better. The proper healing can be confirmed after an MRI scan.
Yes massage helps in increasing the blood supply but keeping the area at rest is more important right now. Massaging can cause displacement of the fractured fragments.
You can have a diet rich in protein and calcium for a better healing.
I hope this answers your query.

Avoid standing for long hours.

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Staying off feet will help and lifting any weight is absolutely no. More work and standing will cause more pain.
Yours is a small fracture. It will heal well with time.
