Does Amoxicillin Cause Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: On 12/24/15 I was given 875/125 Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium tablets to get rid of a sinus problem. This medication caused me to have diarrhea and today(12/28) I am having problems having a bowel movement. I have been drinking lots of water/coconut water & some Gatorade. I am also taking lots of probiotics and am now eating plain greek yogurt. I am concerned because I'm starting to get a headache and would to know how to get my bowels moving again.

Brief Answer:
Diarrhoea could be due to Amoxicillin.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your diarrhoea is most likely due to amoxicillin. You should take amoxicillin after meals. You can also take Ranitidine (Zantac) and continue probiotics. This will reduce the incidence of diarrhoea. Head ache could be due to loss of electrolytes. Take ORS , tender coconut water etc. If there is no improvement the consult your doctor to change the antibiotic. Flouroquinolones like levofloxacin can replace amoxicillin.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Hi Dr. Nishad!

My Dr took me off Amoxicillin and put me on Azithromycin. I have not had a solid bowel movement since Thursday night and I have not had diarrhea since 9am on 12/29. I am starting to take greek yogurt and I have been drinking water & coconut water! I have experienced some gurgling & gas and would like to know How long it may take to get a regular bowel movement after stopping Amoxicillian?

Thank you for your time,

Brief Answer:
Bowel irritation can last 3 to 5 days.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Bowel irritation can last 3 to 5 days. Taking Yogurt or curd and probiotics is good to normalize your bowel. Taking zantac (ranitidine) is also good to decrease gurgling and gas. You can also take banana in moderation. Gradually the bowel will be normalized.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Taking Ranitidine will be helpful for this also.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Taking Ranitidine will be helpful to get a normal bowel movement also as your problem is most likely a reflux constipation. Pain and discomfort can be relieved by taking dicyclomine (Cyclopam). Within 2 days again there is no bowel movement then suppositories like Bisacodyl can be used.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
