Brief Answer:
For moderate to severe depression long term treatment is advised.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts

I can understand your concern. I have read the report though it mentions that you have been suffering from depressive symptoms for about 1.5 years and were admitted for about 9 days. The diagnosis of Moderate Depressive Episode was made.

If the patient needs admission depends upon clinical symptoms and decision of doctor. If the patient is in risk of harming self or others then this is the indication of admission. Otherwise in normal cases psychiatrists advise patients to get admitted for moderate to severe depression.

The treatment of depression is given in acute stage of treatment and then maintenance treatment. Acute treatment is given for about one and half months and once patient start showing improvement of symptoms then maintenance treatment is continued for about 6 months. This is for first episode of depression. In severe cases even longer duration of treatment is advised.

Thanks, Take care.
