Does Brilinta Interact With Lipitor?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Nov 2015
Question: My mother has recently had an angioplastic procedure to install a stent in the main artery from her heart. She is taking medications Brilinta ( blood thinner ), cardivolal for her pacemaker, Lipitor ( cholesterol ) and a high blood pressure medication with potassium ( not for high blood pressure, just for her stent ). She has been having a nagging and constant cough and watery bowel movements often ever since she has started taking the medications after the placement of the stent. Can these problems be caused by these medications and if so what can be done to correct these problems. Both these problems are very hard on her especially since she has arthritis of the upper spine that causes severe pain in her neck especially with the coughing. Any help would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Medication adverse effect

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Your mother symptoms are pretty much correlated with the medications she take. As far as cough is concerned, brilinta also called ticagrelor is notorious for causing cough. Also if the procedure was done under general anesthesia, anesthesia medications can result in such cough symptoms .

Regarding diarrhea every single one of these medication has diarrhea as significant side effect. Regarding management, there are two options. Conservatively treat the symptoms, like coughing with some antitussives and home remedies like salt water gargles, hot beverages like non caffeinated tea, her XXXXXXX or green tea mixed with honey etc and throat lozenges to see if these suppress the cough.

Diarrhea will need motility reducing medications like loperamide as well as diet therapy like BRAT diet ( Banana, rice , apple sauce , toast) pomegranate juices, green tea and yogurt with peppermint should help.

if the symptoms persist then your doctor should be consulted and change of medications should be considered.
