Does Finasteride Cause Reduction In The Volume Of Ejaculate?

Question: I'm approaching 75 and am able to have and enjoy sex. About 2 years ago or longer my ability to ejaculate became sporadic at best and is now practically extinct. I assume this has a connection to the prostate since I've been taking (generic) finasteride for a number of years. I see my urologist once a year but not until July. He put me on Avodart several years ago to shrink a very enlarged prostate in lieu of surgery and explained then that surgery would result in what I am now experiencing during sex. Has the drug actually done what the surgery would have done?
Brief Answer:
Known side effect in 3.7% on finasteride
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about this progressive reduction in the volume of ejaculate and its complete absence at this time. It is a very distressing situation but a recognized side effect of finasteride in as many as 3.7% of persons taking this drug during the first year.
In all, it is not that the drug has actually done what surgery would have done but it is a recognized side effect of this drug.
I hope this addresses your query fully. eel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services.

It appears I'm in only 4% of the males taking Finesteride. For those of us in this minority, is there a better drug option? It appears that I'm in the vast minority at
4%. Is there an alternative to Finesteride that does not have the effects that that drug had?
Brief Answer:
Not quite,No drug is 100% without a side effect
Detailed Answer:
There is really no reason to quit this medication and look for alternatives. Remember all drugs do something we dislike while addressing our problems for which we are actually taking the medication.
Changing would not be the best of ideas right now. Should you consider doing so, please talk to your doctor and get his approval. In this case, we may need to suppress the hormone that finasteride works by blocking its receptors.
Thanks.
