Does Gardasil Vaccination Give Protection From Genital Herpes?

Question: Dear Doctor,
Is it possible for a male with genital herpes to be tested for the exact strain(s) of herpes that he is infected with? If a female that has had the series of three Gardasil vaccines and is therefore protected from specific strains of the virus, and a potential male partner knows specifically which strain(s) he is infected with, then it would theoretically be possible to determine if a potential female partner who has been vaccinated with the Gardasil vaccines is fully protected from the strains that the male has, should those strains match. Is such testing of the male's specific strains possible? I am sure this would be expensive to do, but if it is possible, that would be great information to have. Any information that could be provided on this subject would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi,
Welcome to HCM
Thanks for posting your query.
I think you had confused between Herpes and HPV infection.
Gardasilvaccination is quadrivalent vaccine for the prevention of HPV infection.
Genital Herpes is different from HPV infection. Herpes simplex has only two varieties as HSV1 and HSV2. HSV 2 is primarily a sexually transmitted disease whereas HSV1 is primarily a non-STD.
Only with HPV infection, there are different strains (more than 100) are available and not with HSV. If you want to analyze the HPV strains it may be done in specialized virological labs in developed countries. COBAS cervical test, Aptima HPV assay, oral test kit called Orarisk are available.
