Question: I have had a sore throat off and on for the past three months I was curious if this can be caused by HSV 1? tested neg for all other std except for hsv 1! Test done were chlamydia, gonorrhea, hiv 1&2, hsv 1&2, syphilis, hep a&b&c. A dr diagnosed me with possible herpangina but am unsure with that diagnosit! Also neg for streptgroat! Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Acid reflux needs to be ruled out...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query. I will try my best to help you with this problem.

HSV 1 is known to cause throat infection, but, it may not be recurrent. It will be accompanied with cold sores in the mouth, which you don't have.

Secondly, as all the tests are negative, then, the other common causes of sore throat need to be evaluated. The other causes include acid reflux disease, sinus related issues and allergy.

My sincere suggestions to you are:

1. Drink plenty of warm water
2. Avoid chilled food & beverages/smoking/coffee/alcohol (if any)
3. Try doing gargles with povidone iodine, you will feel better.
4. Also, you try taking proton pump inhibitor such as esomeprazole or pantoperazole.
5. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor for a complete examination of the throat, the larynx, and the sinuses.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
