Does Implanon Stop Ovulation?

default
Posted on Sat, 22 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I have had Implanon for 5 months now. My husband and I have intercourse almost every day. I felt some ovulation type sensations about two weeks ago. I took an Ovulation test and it came up positive... I went to the pharmacy where the pharmacist told me it must be a false positive, I took a pregnancy test just to make sure and it was negative. Today I started wondering about it again so I took another Ovulation test and it's positive again. I'm confused, I thought the implanon was supposed to stop ovulation and why is it positive two weeks later?

Brief Answer:
Need to be evaluated further.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us.

Ovulation test detects LH surge and does not actually denote ovulation; it only predicts ovulation. False positives can happen in polycystic ovaries and when there is premature ovarian failure in the natural condition.

Implanon, on the other hand, decreases the LH levels and prevents ovulation. If you have the ovulation test showing positive persistently, then, you need to consider the accuracy of the test and choose an alternate way.

You may go for the estimation of the serum LH levels, get a proper clinical evaluation by a specialist and get a trans-vaginal sonogram to see the state of the pelvic organs.

If everything else is fine and you still read persistent positive for LH levels, please consider the possibility of failure of the Implanon in preventing ovulation, though this is very rare.

Hope I have clarified your query. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
