Does Oxycodone Work Better Than Hydrocodone?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 May 2017
Question: my husband has a kidney stone and was prescribed oxycodone with acetaminophen... he was taking this to manage his pain while trying to pass the stone. His ER script ran out and he was going away on business for 3 days. Family doctor wrote script but wrote for Hydrocodone with acetaminophen and we didn't realize until he went away and went to take it this morning. Should it work the same way? Any differences? Put it into drug interactions checker and they were the same but he is going to be in meetings and had the oxy sort of down to where he figured out when to take etc. to manage his pain and how coherent he would be on it.... should he expect any different on the hydro?

Brief Answer:
Hydrocodone is more addictive then oxycodone, so don't use it long

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

Both medications are used for the same problem and have the same efficacy. They should be taken in the same way.

Hydrocodone is more addictive then oxycodone though, so I would suggest that if the pain is lower and your husband can control it with just Ibuprofen combined with Acetaminophen, I would say to use that one. Do not use Hydrocodone for longer then 1-2 weeks.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarifications.
