Does SNS Procedure Lead To Black Discoloration Of Nails?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Nov 2015
Question: Ever since my mother ended up living near me I have been taking her to get her nails done. She had never worn nail polish before. That has been 2 years now. She switched to Gel nails, but was still getting chips so she tried a new procedure called SNS. Three weeks ago she was going to get SNS again as it lasted nicely. It was discovered that she had 2 nails that turned black. The salon didn't want to do the SNS again because they felt that it was the culprit.
I have looked at reviews on-line and have found no one else mention their nails turning black from SNS. I really think she might have bruised them when she fell trying to help another woman where she lives. She claims she didn't hit them, but it wouldn't be the first time she didn't remember a small injury.
Do you think that it would be okay for her to do the SNS again? What should I be looking for? If it was a bruise behind her nail, how long might it take to clear up ?

Brief Answer:
Blood flow adequacy should be determined

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

SNS, if done properly, does not lead to blackened nails. You are right in suspecting a traumatic injury especially with the elderly age group, the probability is high. The fingers need to be examined to determine that there is adequate blood supply. Doppler ultrasound may also be advised. Mild purple or initial black discoloration will resolve will resolve with NSAIDs. However drainage of the collected blood via needle puncture under aseptic technique should be considered to avoid any superimposed infection or blood flow impedance.

Wishing you best of health
