The eye ball grows rapidly between 6 months to 6years and grows steadily and attains adult eye ball size by 10 years.
Steroid drugs does not have much effect on the growth of eye ball. They are known to affect the physical growth.

Hence I advice you not to worry.

Brief Answer:
The vision becomes stabilized by 10-12 years.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Vision of 20/20 is achieved by 6years of age. It is about 6/60 at birth becomes 6/18 by 4 years of age and becomes normal 6/6 or 20/20 by 6years of age.
However variations in this occur till 10 years of age.
This occurs in normally.
The growth spurt refers to the final changes which occur by 10 years just before puberty. After 10-12 years there are not much changes.
Hence this age is 10 years with a normal variation of about 2 years depending on the hormonal changes thus making it 10-12 years.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks Dr. Dadapeer K. ,

I have one last question.

Just to clarify, eye changes stop by the time there's hormonal changes and not as result of hormonal changes, please can you confirm this?

Because in the passage under Hyperopia in Opthalmology Assistant, By P. K. XXXXXXX , it mentions there that high hormonal levels during puberty can fix the hyperopia - kindly could you advise further?

Thanks very much, and wishing you all the best.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

I mentioned the eye changes occur depending on the timing of hormonal changes which occur during puberty. The normal age for these changes is around 10-12 years with variation from individual to individual.
Hence what is mentioned in Ophthalmology Assistant is correct.
The correction required is The growth spurt refers to the final changes which occur by 10 years during puberty.

Hypermetropia or hyperopia is universal condition present in all new borns, but this comes to normal by the age of 6 years itself. At this age of 6 years the vision becomes 20/20.This occurs normally in all children.
However in few children who continues to be hyperopic even after 6 years, the next change occurring at the age of 10-12 can correct this.

Hope this answers your question.

thanks again Dr. Dadapeer K

Is the hormonal changes directly responsible for the eye changes?

Or is 'hormonal change' just used as a point during development?

Many thanks and all the best
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dadapeer K (35 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Hormonal changes play role but it is less significant compared to others.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Hormonal changes affect mainly the physical growth like height and development of secondary sexual characters. The hormonal changes as such plays a role in the development of the eye but the role is less significant as the normal changes except the size are complete by 6 years of age.
The hormonal changes play role in the size of the eye ball and this will help in physiological correction of any residual hypermetropic refractive error which remains even after 6 years of age.

Hope this answers your question.

Ok one last final thing.

Lets suppose the hormones caused some changes in the eye size.

Cornea and Sclera are the front component and back component of the eye. So presumably these are the components which are increased. since these are made of proteins can we say cornea and sclera are renewable components?

Thanks in advance

Dear Dr. Dadapeer K, Thanks again for your valued information and advice.

Sorry for asking, but whats the renewal rates for cornea and sclera?

Just in case the steroids i took grew these components.

I just spoke to mum and she said when I was younger I could read very well, and didnt need eye tests. I think i was 20/20 by 6 years old but always have slight doubt anxiety maybe not.

I hope to close after this. Thanks alot
Best Regards
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dadapeer K (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
The renewal rate is about 6 months.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The renewal of collagen is a continuous process as the new collagen is secreted and old is replaced.
The renewal rates vary with many factors and vary from person to person.
On an average the renewal rate is about 6 months.

Since you are not having any refractive error and vision was 20/20 by 6 years of age, no need to be worried.
