Does Vraylar Cause Weight Gain?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Oct 2016
Question: I have bipolar I mixed. I want to try Vraylar at 3 mg again. Right now, I am taking Wellbutrin 300mg in the morning along with Adderall 15mg 3-4 times a day. Then at night I am taking Geodon 160mg and Abilify 15 mg and clonazepam 2mg. This seems like a lot of medicine to me. Do I take Vraylar alone? How do I get off the other meds if I try Vraylar again? The drug report mentions weight gain and decreased appetite. So which is it? And the drug mentions somnolence and insomnia, so do I take it at night or in the morning?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thank you so much for using my direct private service. I now consider you my private patient, and will do anything I can to help you.

As with most psychotropic medications, Vraylar has a small risk of weight gain, usually not more than 5 pounds on average. Everyone reacts differently. It works well for bipolar mixed episodes. Do not change any drugs without your doctor explicitly telling you to. Hopefully if the Vraylar works you can slowly come off the Adderall and clonazepam -- the Adderall in particular is likely making your symptoms much worse (increase agitation, anxiety, and irritability). It may take a few dose increases for Vraylar to start working at maximum efficacy.
