Does A Back Injury Cause Heart Attack?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: Long story short, my husband had a serious back injury and was unable to work. He became very depressed, overweight and developed stage II Diabetes and high blood pressure. He became lethargic and very overwrought due to the circumstances.
Within a couple of years of his back injury he had a heart attack. A stint was inserted and he was sent home from the hospital.
One month later, he had a second heart attack and passed away.
My question is, how can anyone say that his back injury had nothing to do with his heart attacks?
Thank you,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Please see below.

Detailed Answer:
Respected Ma'm
This speculation "That your husband's heart attack occurred secondary to inactivity/ obesity/diabetes/ high blood pressure resulting from back injury" can neither be denied nor it can be confirmed.
Yes, this could have been a possible sequence of events. Back injury can lead to inactivity. Inactivity can lead to obesity. Obesity may be associated with disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure and subsequently heart disease.
However , on other hand, if someone asks that can it be proved that the heart attack was result of this injury only or this injury definitely contributed to the heart attack, then answer will not be straightforward YES. Because heart attack can occur in absence of all these risk factors and heart attack does not occur in many individuals who have all these risk factors. In plain words the association is not 100%.
This is only the medical aspect of issue. How the legal fraternity interpret this is an entirely different issue. Depending upon the local laws and consideration, people will have different inferences out of these facts.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
