Does A Foul Urine Smell Require A Medical Consultation?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Jan 2024
Question: Foul smell of the urine of the Kid, especially in the Morning after getting up from sleep. During day time, urine smells but less. When drinks plenty of water/fluid, the also smell reduces. Didn't visit any urologist, though asked one known urologist about it(while visiting for me), he told me this is nothing to worry. It has been more than 1 year we are noticing this. urine is clear and flow is also clear. No pain complained during urination. Frequency also seems normal. Kid is healthy(height, weight normal). No medical abnormality. 1 year ago did urine culture, was normal. Please suggest any treatment, medicine etc

Brief Answer:

I don't think there is much to worry

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I can understand your concern but I won't get overly worried as this foul smell is not there always, child is otherwise healthy and investigations are normal.

Urine itself has characteristic odour due to ammonia and urea.

More concentrated urine due to less intake of water may cause strong odor.

It is more common in morning after a prolonged fasting period and improves during day time.

Urinary infection and few uncommon causes like amino acid or other metabolic disorders may also cause foul smell urine.

But in your case investigations are normal, growth is good and there are no associated symptoms I don't think any treatment is needed.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Pradeep Kumar
