Brief Answer:
Better to have somebody around.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

Have somebody around, yes. Not necessary live with someone. Patient can set it up, but will require good training and management of a sterile area around needle is essential.

It can be managed individually if:

1. You have received proper training in managing dialysis.
2. You do not have associated dizziness or volume related weakness and you were on it for some time to adjust with volume imbalance related problems.

You will require somebody around as:

1. Age is a risk
2. Numerous medications associated interactions.
3. Risk of infection is always present particularly peritonitis - Sterile technique essential.
4. Co-morbid illnesses, which could increase further risk.
5. Volume imbalance leading to particularly dizziness and further risks.

My suggestion would be to have somebody atleast around, not necessary always. Somebody to check at times, or on speed dial to come soon.
It is not very important to always live with someone. Occasional support is and will be necessary and as far as possible, avoid any unnecessary avoidable risks.

Any further queries, happy to help again.
Take care.
